ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some of the basic information requirements for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that are beginning to emerge from the literature. It focuses on the Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) segment of ITS and the ATIS portion of Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO). It also focuses on the type of information that users of ITS would like to receive in their vehicle. After discussing the identification of information requirements for the ATIS-CVO portion of ITS, explores the requirements for various subgroups revealed through statistical analyses. The results presented in the chapter support the central premise: Drivers cannot be considered as a homogeneous audience for motorist information. The method employed in this study has reinforced the idea that user groups have different behaviors and that identifying these differences will help to determine each group's use of and response to motorist information.
