ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses human-system interface issues related to the design and use of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (AT1S). An ATIS is a subset of the more general transportation system being planned, known as the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The purpose of an ATIS is to regulate the flow of vehicles along roads and highways by using emerging sensor, computer, communication, and control technologies. TravTek has a number of IRANS and In-vehicle Motorist Services Information System (IMSIS) features and will provide data from many studies, with well over 1,000,000 miles of data collected. A major component of ITS will include navigation aids. These devices can provide the user with current traffic conditions, alternate routes, and guidance over the alternate routes. A key knowledge gap requiring both application of existing guidelines and the creation of new guidelines is driver capacity. The human-factors community is currently divided on the issue of what is safe and what is unsafe in the driving environment.
