ABSTRACT

The traffic management center (TMC) is the primary ganglion in this network of data sensing, information processing, communications, and control devices. From the TMC, human operators and central computers monitor the traffic status and carry out any measures necessary to promote smooth traffic flow. Advanced traffic management systems (ATMSs) incorporate large numbers of highly capable traffic flow and roadway condition sensors to provide the basis for enhanced ATMS operator situation awareness. The organic assets of the TMC will Include sensor systems, data processing systems, and effector systems. In addition to its own sensor and effector systems, the TMC will obtain data from other sources and provide output through other channels, thereby gaining access to assets of other organizations. Human Factors Handbook for Advanced Traffic Management Center Design was prepared for the Federal Highway Administration by Georgia Tech Research Institute to provide detailed human factors guidelines and promote consideration of other TMC design issues.
