ABSTRACT

The implicit function of the final chapter of a volume like this one is to sum up what has gone before, but I am not going to try to perform that function. The symposium was organized to honor Allen Newell, who, to the deep sorrow of all of us, did not live to attend it. In reporting a substantial number of examples of good science, we have already, in the symposium and ensuing volume, honored him in the way that would have meant the most to him. I too wish to honor Al by discussing science.
