ABSTRACT
Most parents read and tell stories to and with their young children. These storytelling experiences have been shown to have beneficial effects on children’s later cognitive abilities (Brown, Cromer, & Weinberg, 1986; Goldfield & Snow, 1984; Snow & Ninio, 1986). Although the importance of these storytelling experiences has been demonstrated, relatively little is known about parental perspectives concerning the nature and function of storytelling.
