ABSTRACT
This chapter did not begin as a study of parenting or family life. However, as our results began to take shape, we found ourselves becoming increasingly concerned with the role of the family in the evocation and development of empathy as well as with the role of empathy in the social production and reproduction of all institutional life, including the family.
