ABSTRACT

Emotions—joy and sadness, fear and anger, passion and regret—play a pivotal role in the definition of human existence. The milestones of one's life, such as the birth of a child or the loss of a loved one, are events imbued with profound emotion. For many years, perhaps for a lifetime, the memory of such an event might rekindle in us the same emotional experience. And too, perhaps for a lifetime, experiencing a similar emotion under a completely different set of circumstances might unexpectedly revive the memory of that special event. So, sitting at a concert contemplating a beautiful melody, we may suddenly remember gazing at the sun as it set upon the ocean—an event we had perceived while experiencing a similar sense of wonder.
