ABSTRACT

About 10 years ago, Witkin and Goodenough (1977, 1981) highlighted the need to move the field of field dependent-independent (FDI) research into the realm of close, that is, intimate, interpersonal relationships. Around that time, and with this impetus, my colleagues Ronald Sabatelli, Ross Buck, and I began some work on the role that FDI played in communication and the quality of relationships in courtship and marriage.
