ABSTRACT

The chapters presented in this volume are a testimonial to the seminal and creative work of Hy Witkin. They have demonstrated that although Hy, his colleagues, and others have done an enormous amount of research in the field of cognitive styles, there is much to be done to elucidate the manifold dimensions of this most elusive and complex phenomenon. There is still need for more conceptualization and subsequent empirical work to understand the origins, structure, function, and general role that field dependence-independence (FDI) plays. The fact that this construct was also placed into a larger conceptual framework enhances its contribution to mainstream psychology. At the same time, there is need to consider its place with other cognitive style constructs.
