ABSTRACT

The general aim of this chapter is to describe a number of research problems that, if pursued (a) will help clarify theoretically the construct of field dependence-independence (FDI) cognitive style; (b) will open areas where this construct can be profitably used to understand human functioning; and (c) will uncover areas of applicability that contribute to more optimal functioning in everyday living. In order to describe the background of the proposed research, there follows a brief historical sketch of the FDI construct and then some issues and unsolved problems regarding this construct. These issues/problems serve as the context for describing the proposed research to advance this conceptualization and its application.
