A Social Averaging Theorem for Group Decision Making

A central characteristic of any group decision is compromise. Different members will usually have different goals, so attainment of one member’s goal would entail more or less sacrifice by the other members. Even when all members have the same ostensible goal, they will usually differ about how to reach that goal. Almost inevitably, then, any common decision will require compromise.
