ABSTRACT

In 1968, McGuire suggested that the human cognitive system has more structure than a bowl of oatmeal (McGuire, 1968, p. 143). In the most recent piece of work, the McGuires (chapter 1, this volume) assert that thought systems have more internal organization than a bowl of cornflakes. More than the choice of breakfast foods has changed in the 20-plus years. Over that time period, much progress has been made in describing the structure and organization of the human cognitive system and in understanding the contents and the dynamic operation of thought systems. Their current chapter adds much to this progression of knowledge.
