ABSTRACT

In the target chapter, McGuire and McGuire present a model of the “thought systems” that people construct around attitudinal “core events.” They argue that these thought systems generally involve the antecedents and consequences of the core event, map onto evaluation and likelihood dimensions, reflect both realistic and “autistic” coping needs, and can be assessed through free-association tasks. They present a coding scheme for categorizing the responses obtained through free association and use these data to support the main premises of their model.
