ABSTRACT

How should we think of thoughts and thought systems? My aim in this chapter is to pivot on the target chapter of this volume and to contrast answers that would come out of a quite standard cognitivism and a rather nonstandard mentalism. In doing so, I sketch those metatheoretical views for contrast and ask about the status of the evidence for the key question dividing them: Is there unconscious symbolic representation? I suggest a strategy for studying thought systems.
