ABSTRACT

Abstract

The presence of chronic illness in children and adolescents has far-reaching consequences. In this chapter, the evidence concerning the impact of chronic illness is discussed in the following domains: cognitive and academic functioning, peers and social aspects of the school environment, self-concept and self-esteem, and the role of the family. During the past decade, there has been a significant increase in both the quantity and quality of research in this area which provides a base from which better questions can be raised and responsible policies proposed.
