ABSTRACT

The family environment typically is the first setting in which developing children not only learn and practice new competencies but also soon come to understand and evaluate their own level of competence. Undoubtedly, a major responsibility for this early development within families is due to specific parental behaviors and beliefs, particularly maternal behaviors and beliefs in the case of very young children. Various parental manifestations with their supporting ideational and attitudinal bases significantly impact developing children’s competencies and sense of competence.
