ABSTRACT

One conspicuous reminder that parents do indeed affect their children lies in the phenomenon of intergenerational transmission—the adoption by children of beliefs, attitudes, interests, or behavior similar to their parents. Maybe the most striking instances occur when a child follows a parent’s vocational interest and both achieve excellence and international recognition. Some of the names of families that illustrate this transmission include Darwin, Bach, Mozart, Freud, Gandi, and Wyeth, to name but a few.
