ABSTRACT
The utterance of even a simple one-syllable word requires the coordination in time and space of over 70 muscles and 8 to 10 different body parts, ranging from the diaphragm to the lips. The acquisition of language is considered the preeminent achievement of human cognition, and motor coordination and control of the articulators is an essential component of this developmental landmark.
