ABSTRACT
The origins of language remain controversial. It is held by many that language is unique to the genotype of our species. By implication, even our nearest living relatives—the great apes (Pongidae)–should have no capacity for it. In contrast, the view advanced in this chapter is that language is neither monolithic nor totally beyond the competence of the chimpanzee (Pan).
