ABSTRACT

Understanding the development of perceptual-motor skill is a critical theoretical issue for cognitive psychology. It also has significant practical implications for the efficiency and safety of vehicular control systems. In this paper a theoretical framework will be presented for organizing the empirical literature regarding perceptual-motor skill development. Particular attention will be given to perceptual-motor skills in the context of vehicular control. Our hope is that the framework presented will help to understand available empirical work; that it will generate interesting hypotheses for further work; and that it will provide useful guidelines for practitioners responsible for the design of training systems.
