ABSTRACT

To understand the basis of locomotion it is instructive to examine different forms of locomotion to determine the common denominator. When we look around the world we see that creatures have developed many different ways of getting themselves about, and people are forever inventing new methods using various mechanical and electronic devices. The invariant factor in the array of forms of locomotion is not the form of body movement employed but the form of the information about the organism’s movement relative to the environment which controls the action. Providing the information is available, it is a relatively simple matter for a person to learn to make a new set of movements in order to guide a vehicle, sail a windsurfer and so on.
