ABSTRACT

Assuming that the perception of one’s own movement is based on different kinds of information, has different phenomenal manifestations, and serves different purposes, a vocabulary is needed to distinguish among the various kinds of self motion. For the same reasons, different terms are needed to distinguish self movement from other kinds of movement. Descriptive terms are chosen carefully by researchers and theorists, usually to make theoretical distinctions. Therefore, it is instructive to examine differences and shifts in vocabulary as representative of the contrasts and changes in conception of a phenomenon and approaches to its understanding. This chapter defines terms already in use, equates them when possible, and contrasts them otherwise in order to assess similarities and differences over both historical periods and schools of theory.
