ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is both theoretical and empirical. Theoretically it is proposed that attachment and social support can be viewed under the broader rubric of social relations. The convoy model of social relations (Antonucci, 1985; Kahn & Antonucci, 1980; Plath, 1980) is presented within this context as a theoretical framework within which to view social relations, including attachment and social support, over the life course. The second portion of the chapter is designed to empirically examine social relations within the convoy model, using the individual's ability to cope with negative life events as an illustrative case.
