ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the limnological properties of the reservoir, and the human interventions which have been used to increase fish production. Meicuan Reservoir, impounded in 1958, is located at Meicuan town, Wuxue City, Hubei Province. In Meicuan Reservoir, the basic information required for fisheries enhancement was a study of the ecology and productivity of the aquatic ecosystem, and an analysis of the various fishery and pond culture technologies which could be integrated with on-going reservoir functions. Meicuan Reservoir was constructed primarily to conserve water for irrigation purposes and secondarily for fishersies. For each sampling station in Meicuan Reservoir the percentage of indicators falling into each category was examined. A number of characteristics make Meicuan Reservoir suitable for the application of integrated fish farming techniques.
