ABSTRACT

This chapter draws the extension of integrated fish farming technologies to poor regions both in China and other countries is necessary, and the growing complexity of integrated fish farming necessitates an investment in more rigorous scientific research. Integrated fish farming encompasses both the terrestrial and aquatic ecological structures of integrated management practices. It includes fish farming, planting crops and raising animals as well as an agricultural processing industry. China’s integrated fish farms are no longer the simple dual or triple combinations of fish farming/plant crops and/or raising animals typical of traditional farms. The Helie Fish Farm creates a total market value of duck produce and byproducts that is 3.5 times higher than the value of a live duck. The extension of integrated fish farming principles and technologies to areas with low yields and poor efficiencies must be accelerated to improve local economies. The development of integrated fish farming will be closely linked with development of the market economy.
