ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the productive potential of carp fry and fingerlings stocked into flooded rice fields. It describes Benthic and Zooplankton biomass were measured to determine whether fish culture may be economical under the conditions. The need for increased food production and heightened awareness of the limitations of intensive agriculture, have led to the recognition of the need for ecologically benign practices. Rice fish culture is therefore being seen once again as a practice which can be part of Integrated Farming Systems. Carp culture in rice fields is already a tradition in Eastern Europe, and especially in Hungary. Rice fish culture systems offer an environment in which the rice farmer can produce additional food or salable product. Farmers’ incomes in temperate climates may be increased by introducing fish culture in rice fields, and the practice would be probably economical if adequate fish culture technology were applied.
