ABSTRACT

The question addressed in Dr. Raymond Cattell’s chapter is the basic one of how we evaluate roles and states as they are induced in a variety of situations. But the essential points answering this question are made only by placing them in the context of Cattell’s broader theories. I probably understood the essential points best on the second or third reading of the chapter, because–in order to understand them–I found that I had to reduce some negative transfer from my prior assumptions about Cattell. Hence, I begin by sharing with you some points that I found useful to “forget” in going through this chapter, the better to understand its major contribution.
