ABSTRACT

The specialty of selection has been a major effort of industrial and military psychologists for as long as these disciplines have been in existence. As evidence of success, much of the public reputation of psychologists has been based on contributions in the area of selection. Pilot selection, as a subset of personnel selection, was an early area of investigation with some aspects of selection (or evaluation) going as far back as World War I (McFarland, 1953). Early interest in pilot selection was triggered by the same factor that is of interest today, that is, the high cost of mistakes in selection. This chapter concentrates on more recent pilot selection and a specific example of an airline selection program.
