ABSTRACT

The “Founder’s Group” of the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Association started out as a training seminar with Steve de Shazer. We weren’t very organized and the group evolved over time. We wanted to share training ideas and exercises and we wanted to work with each other as colleagues. The meetings were held at Purdue University in Calumet, which has an accredited Marriage and Family Therapy program. To help us out, several students were invited to participate as “volunteers.” However, it became clear very quickly that our group was not going to have anything to do with a hierarchy that placed students in a “don’t-know-anything-so-keep-quiet” position. Students were invited to participate and were asked direct questions about their ideas and experience.
