ABSTRACT

Emotional cutoff is an instinctual process between generations in the behavior of living things. In humans, this emotional process deals with the way people separate themselves from the past in order to start their lives in the present generation. This process varies from person to person and family system to family system depending on the degree of unresolved emotional attachment one has to one's parents, and the degree of anxiety that comes from that unresolved emotional attachment. Variation of the emotional process between the generations lies along a continuum.
