ABSTRACT

Increasingly, performance by women questions existing binary definitions of gender and sexuality by destabilizing familiar notions of the ‘real’ and creating new production values and aesthetics in the process. This paper explores three theatre companies (Spin/Stir; Amy Roadstone Productions; ObScene Productions) and two performing artists (Helena Goldwater and Helen Paris), all U.K. based and at the cutting edge of contemporary lesbian performance, who personify these developments.
