ABSTRACT

A number of years ago, I became aware of a model for conceptualizing the different levels of intervention that are required in helping couples with sexual dissatisfactions or dysfunctions. This so-called PLISSIT model identified four different levels of expertise and intervention (Annon, 1976). The model was very useful in its intended field of sex therapy, and I have found that the model works well in generalizing beyond the practice of sex therapy to include much of what we do, or attempt to do, in marital and family therapy. The model also works well as a framework for providing feedback in clinical consultation and supervision.
