ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to draw the attention of the reader to the variations of wood, its uses, the behaviour of wood and the factors that lead to its deterioration. Wood is a material which virtually everybody recognizes. There are relatively few people who know how it behaves and how it should be cared for. Therefore a brief description of it may help the Curator to appreciate its needs and varied nature.
