ABSTRACT
The documentary research sources for the social historian are extremely rich, ranging from formal archival material to a wealth of oral, literary and pictorial evidence. By using a combination of these, it is possible to establish, with a fair degree of accuracy, the life-style, attitudes and working practices of the societies under consideration.
