ABSTRACT

The following is a translation and comment upon a document that had a far-reaching effect upon the ‘ulama’ and mujahidin of the Maghrib and Western Sudan. It is best known as Mi’raj al-Su ‘ud ilaNaylHukm Majlub al-Sud, but it also came to be known by another title, al-Kashf wa’l-Bayan liAsnaf Majlub al-Sudan. Its importance lies principally in its use as a standard reference for the categories of the enslaveable among the peoples of the Sudan, and as a basis for judgement concerning which African groups could be fought in jihad.
