ABSTRACT

Cassandra, as you might recall, was cursed by the gods: her prophecies always came true (and they often seemed to have been prophesies of doom; witness her prediction of the imminent fall of Troy), but she was never believed. Cassandra's modern followers among experts on regional security in Asia Pacific are better off. They receive much attention for their dire warnings about the future of Asia Pacific security (though fortunately we still do not have any proof that their forecasts are always correct). (1) China's recent actions over Taiwan's presidential election have done much to help the stocks of modem Cassandras rise.
