ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews Iranian women's involvement in journalism from the emergence of the first newspaper published by an Iranian woman in 1910, to 1997 when hundreds of women were working on dozens of female-oriented periodicals as well as on other newspapers. The article considers the involvement of Iranian women in journalism in the context of the country's increasing urbanization, the rise in literacy and women's enhanced social, political and economic participation. Having analysed the content of the range of journalism produced by Iranian women, the chapter concludes that they demonstrate a considerable interest in specific issues rather than generalizations, and a sharp eye for detail and the personal touch — qualities which are vital to attracting and maintaining the attention of the readers.
