ABSTRACT

National survey data reveal that 76% of the physical assaults and rapes on women were perpetrated by intimate partners-the very people whom we trust to help keep us safe and secure (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). The present chapter examines three major areas of violence against women: partner or intimate violence, rape, and sexual harassment. Despite the alarming incidence of these forms of violence against women, they are markedly underreported and represent a silent pandemic in our society. This chapter is greatly influenced by a landmark book in this area, No Safe Haven: Male Violence Against Women at Home, at Work, and in the Community (Koss, Goodman, Browne, Fitzgerald, Keita, & Russo, 1994).
