ABSTRACT

A globally accepted definition of sustainable development is that it ‘meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ (Brundtland Commission 1987). We share this beautiful planet with blue skies and seas with 70 million other species in an ecosystem both dynamic and finite, driven by the regenerative resources of the sun. The challenge for contemporary designers is to use these regenerative powers to design a sustainable habitat within the carrying capacity of the finite eco-system that is our Mother Earth.
