ABSTRACT

An essential condition of a future sustainable society is to have a low environmental impact. Reducing gas emissions in our daily lives is urgently necessary, especially reducing our daily energy consumption in the home and at work. Developed countries have to reduce 80 per cent of their present global-warming gas emissions by 2050 in order to maintain a sustainable Earth. Despite the variety of approaches to the concept of eco-urbanity, we all share a primary mutual concern: global warming. How can we create communities, towns or cities with a low environmental impact? Many ideas for a sustainable city, compact city, or eco-city have been presented and discussed on different scales, but most of them are in thrall to the modern energy myth, namely, that our problems can be solved by utilizing energy.
