ABSTRACT

With the rapid increase in urbanisation worldwide, particularly in Asia, and the growth in the number of very large cities and metropolitan regions, the need to achieve more sustainable urban forms is becoming critical. The sheer scale of the changes from a rural to a predominantly urban world population leads to some questions about the adequacy of our existing knowledge and the paradigms of urban sustainability. There has, of course, been a considerable amount of research to determine what defines and characterises the form of the sustainable city, and which forms may most affect sustainability. This is a complex issue.
