ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book suggests a number of issues in cartography that are in need of examination. It provides a more sustained analysis of role of intermediary design factors is needed, along with an analysis of the effects of specific interventions designed to make an environment easier to navigate through. The book argues that research should centre on analysing spatial descriptions, such as route and survey descriptions, using these to investigate basic questions concerning knowledge form and structure. It illustrates, research concerning the development of spatial knowledge across the life-span has been unevenly distributed. The book discusses future research in the development of cognitive mapping which include studies exploring scale effects, new technologies such as virtual reality and tracking technologies, and the causes of development.
