ABSTRACT

Based on 1995 census data, the estimated total population of Japan was 125,569,000; the population density was 336.8 persons per square kilometre. The proportion of the population aged over 65 years has rapidly increased and accounted for 14.1 per cent of the total population in 1994. A baby boom has also occurred, and the proportion of the population between 0 and 14 years old accounted for 16.3 per cent (20,415,000 persons). The number of children born to one female in her lifetime was 1.50 on average in 1994.
