ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the conceptual basis and benefits of a psychoanalytic approach to organisational consulting. We demonstrate how the approach offers a unique understanding of the important non-rational aspects of organisational life, and thus complements other more traditional, rational conceptual frameworks. This approach, therefore, is a valuable addition to the theoretical framework which informs consulting practice rather than an exclusive theoretical perspective. The chapter suggests a process whereby consultants can develop capability in this area, drawing on the authors’ experience of training and supervising psychoanalytically informed practitioners.
