ABSTRACT

Robert Fenton and Jane Knight write from their positions as the past and present Directors of Adult Training at the Society of Analytical Psychology. They explain the rigorous selection procedure for candidates and they emphasise how supervision of the trainees’ clinical work is viewed as a core element. Although the development of an analyst proceeds individually, the authors draw attention to the way that the structure of training requirements can influence the analytic process. The work of C.G. Jung is the mainspring for the understanding of analytic work; however, in accord with Jung’s empirical attitude, the knowledge of unconscious processes is supplemented with psychoanalytic theory and other perspectives. It is the trainee’s ability to relate theory to clinical practice, and to have developed an analytic relationship with their analysands, which signals a readiness to apply for membership.
