ABSTRACT

Wendy Bratherton uses clinical examples to show how powerful emotions within, and between, men and women which affect personal relationships may be traced to deep damage within the psyche. Writing from a point of view that is acknowledging the interplay between collective culture and the individual, Wendy Bratherton finds Jung’s concept of anima and animus provides a dynamic model by which to witness not only the movement of masculine and feminine energies within the psyche, but also the relationship of these to dominating cultural norms. For example, Bratherton comments on how, within patriarchal western societies, the valuing of the thinking function over the feeling function can lead to a serious split in how men and women experience themselves and the world.
