ABSTRACT

Jung had much less to say about the sexual object than Freud but much more to say about the gendered subject. Where Freud spoke about bisexuality in relation to sexual orientation and the choice of either a same-sex or opposite-sex object, Jung spoke about contrasexuality in relation to gender identity and the internal relationship to the gender characteristics of the opposite sex. He believed the contrasexual archetypes of anima and animus gave each sex access to the gender characteristics of the other and that the integration of these characteristics constituted an important aspect of the individuation process.
