ABSTRACT

Mel Marshak’s paper concentrates on contemporary formulations in psychoanalysis and analytical psychology around the patient-analyst relationship. She describes the shift from a subject-object perspective to one of intersubjectivity, recognising that the experience of transference and countertransference is nowadays explored and clarified in terms of a single system. Furthermore she suggests that Jung’s use of alchemical symbols to describe the analyst-patient relationship anticipated the current emphasis on intersubjectivity.
