ABSTRACT

According to the Mishnah (c. 200 ce and hereafter abbreviated m.), the daily liturgy, in Hebrew, consists of two distinct units: the Shema and its blessings, and the eighteen-benediction Amidah. Both are recited morning and evening, whereas the Amidah is recited also in the afternoon. During the course of the third century they became welded together for the morning service and later for the evening service.
