ABSTRACT

This hymn celebrating the process of spiritual regeneration is found embedded within a revelation dialogue between the Hellenized Egyptian gods Hermes Trismegistus and Tat (the text known as Corpus Hermeticum XIII). We learn that the soul, with the aid of divine powers operative within the enlightened person, can overcome the natural forces in control of our world and achieve immortality. Though the prayer fits comfortably within its surrounding dialogue, it most likely also had an independent use within Hermetic pious circles. By reading or perhaps by chanting the hymn, the initiate could experience, anticipate, or possibly even recall his or her own salvation.
